No Mow May and Grass Cutting – Supporting Biodiversity in Chigwell

Published: 27 May 2026

Chigwell Parish Council has received several enquiries regarding grass cutting on Parish Council-owned land. The Council supports No Mow May as part of its Biodiversity and Herbicide Policy (August 2025).

While No Mow May focuses on May, the Council operates a reduced mowing period from April to late August/early September, allowing grass and wildflowers to flower and set seed, supporting pollinators and wildlife. This reflects the Council’s duty under the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006.

Grass areas, verges and open spaces are managed as wildlife-friendly areas (mini-meadows) where appropriate. Reduced mowing helps provide food sources, shelter, and stronger ecosystems.

Grass Cutting Approach

  • No routine mowing during the main growing season, where practical
  • Annual cut in late summer, with cuttings removed
  • Some areas left uncut on rotation
  • Pathways, borders, sightlines and high-use areas may still be mown regularly for safety, access and appearance (including areas such as Station Green and the Cemetery)

A Balanced Approach

Not all areas will be left uncut. The Council will continue to balance biodiversity benefits with public safety, access and the amenity of shared spaces.
This forms part of a long-term, policy-led approach to enhancing biodiversity and supporting a greener Chigwell.
