Improving Road Safety in Chigwell: New Solar-Powered Speed Sign Installed

Chigwell Parish Council is pleased to announce the installation of a new solar-powered Vehicle Activated Speed (VAS) sign on Courtland Drive, Chigwell. The sign has been introduced as part of the Council's ongoing commitment to improving road safety, encouraging compliance with speed limits, and helping to create a safer environment for residents, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.

The new sign uses renewable solar energy, providing an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution whilst reducing the need for external power supplies. When activated by approaching vehicles, the sign displays a visual reminder to drivers of their speed, helping to increase awareness and encourage safer driving behaviour.

A key advantage of the equipment is its flexibility. The sign can be rotated to face either direction, allowing traffic travelling from both approaches to be monitored at different times. This enables the Council to maximise its effectiveness and respond to areas of greatest need.

In addition to its speed awareness function, the equipment is capable of collecting valuable traffic and vehicle speed data. This information will help the Council to better understand traffic patterns on local roads and will support evidence-based decisions regarding future road safety initiatives and traffic management measures.

The installation has been made possible on land owned and maintained by Chigwell Parish Council and represents a further investment in measures that directly benefit the local community. The Council hopes that, subject to the necessary approvals and permissions, similar Vehicle Activated Speed signs can be introduced at other appropriate locations across the parish in the future.

By combining driver awareness with the collection of meaningful traffic data, the new sign on Courtland Drive is an important step towards supporting safer roads throughout Chigwell. The Parish Council will continue to explore opportunities to work with partners and stakeholders to improve road safety and enhance the quality of life for local residents.
