Could you stand for election as a Parish Councillor?
Published: 09 September 2025
The Electoral Officer has confirmed that letters from 10 electors have being received. This means that the vacancy in Grange Hill resulting from the recent resignation by a Councillor will be filled via an election rather than by a process called co-option which is when a new Councillor is appointed from applications received by the Council.
The date of the election has yet to be confirmed; once it is there will be a timetable of events for the election on the Parish website which will include nominations, deadlines (registration, postal, proxy) and other details.
The Parish have £5,000 budget set aside to pay for an election; if the cost to the Parish is more then the funding will come from the budgets for other Parish services
If you are interested in standing for election, the details of how to stand can be found on the Electoral Commission's website. The Returning Officer at Epping Forest can also provide information and will offer briefings ahead of an election. We strongly advise you to attend one of these if you have not stood for election before.
Being elected as a parish councillor is a great way to:
Represent Chigwell residents and give them a voice
Influence decisions that affect our village and its services
Work with others to protect and improve local facilities
Get involved in projects that benefit the whole community
You don’t need special qualifications, just a genuine interest in Chigwell and a willingness to give some of your time. Training and support are provided.
